Episode # 3 — Spirituality Cannot Be Hedonism — Orthodoxy Transforming
Orthodoxy Transforming episode #3. In the last podcast, we saw that spirituality cannot be asceticism — which means to deny oneself pleasures of this world. The material world is not evil. Pain does not equal being spiritual. In this podcast, we will explain why the opposite cannot be spirituality: hedonism. Hedonism is the idea that the more one indulges oneself with pleasures, the more spiritual they are. Hedonism is the opposite of asceticism and is just as flawed as a candidate for real, meaningful spirituality. Both asceticism and hedonism, opposite extremes, were held to be valued spiritual approaches in the ancient world and in the middle ages. Neither is adequate or true. Having dismissed the old tried and true definitions of spirituality, we shall explore what we mean by the word “spirituality” in the next podcast.
