Episode # 5 — First Spiritual Observation — Orthodoxy Transforming
Orthodoxy Transforming #5. The first basic truth of spirituality is so simple we have overlooked it: everything has a beginning and an end. We are temporary. Some people find this thought dreadful. They schedule their lives wall to wall chasing the illusion that they will be too busy to end; or too rich or too important to end. No one likes to think about their end. We celebrate our beginning each year with parties and hoopla. But, we ignore our ends, postpone thinking about them and, if we can, flatly ignore them. However, spirituality is about truth and truth, it seems, contains ideas that may not be comfortable. But, discomfort does not make the truth go away. The first step of spirituality is to recognize the truth of impermanence: everything begins and everything ends. Unless we are spiritual enough to examine this most basic truth, our search for meaning in life will end in denial until even our denial will be put to an end. I didn’t say the spiritual path was easy or comfortable. But, I promise it is a wonderful path that will bring meaning, enjoyment and satisfaction — hope — into your life! In the next podcast we will examine the role of meditation in helping us remember and accept the obvious!
